UW-Milwaukee breach includes 75,000 names, Social Security numbers

The Business Journal, August 10, 2011

A computer security breach at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee may have exposed the names and Social Security numbers of about 75,000 people associated with the school. The incident primarily affected current and former employees and students. The university said in a press release that it is sending letters to those who may be affected. Officials do not believe the motive for the hackers was identity theft, and found no evidence of any attempt to download confidential information. University technology staff discovered May 25 that unauthorized individuals had installed computer viruses on a university server that housed a software system managing confidential information for several departments, according to a news release. The university immediately shut down the system and reassessed security before restarting it. UW-Milwaukee also alerted local and federal authorities. Several weeks into an investigation of the incident, the university discovered that a database associated with the system was accessible to the hackers. Investigators have been unable to identify those who gained unauthorized access, the school said.  http://www.bizjournals.com/milwaukee/news/2011/08/10/uw-milwaukee-breach-includes.html
